Signs of life

A caterpillar experiment becomes a beautiful black swallowtail butterfly release party. Karis squealed, and I was thoroughly giddy even though I knew what to expect. I think we'll do this every year.

Bob and I chatted on his lawn last night as the mosquitoes gnawed at our ankles and Karis twirled around on his lawn. Karis adores Bob, calling him by his first name like she would any friend her own age even though he's about 70 years older. He is equally smitten as well, and who could blame him? He spends his days tirelessly caring for his ailing wife who suffered a stroke a couple of years ago. So a little girl's frequent admission, "Bob, I love you!" does his exhausted, grieving heart good. Her love is simple and uncomplicated. I'm grateful for that.

The singing. Oh the singing. During playtime. Meal time. Drive time. Nap time. Bath time. Shopping-in-Publix-when-all-I-need-is-just-a-moment-of-peace-and-quiet-to-think time. All.the.time.

i am having major butterfly envy right now. i caught a caterpillar and i found out it's just a stinkin' moth. and it's eating my garden up because it will only eat tomato and jalapeno leaves. kind of wondering why i'm keeping it...

i'm totally with you on the singing. but even i laugh when we're strolling down the publix aisles and the boys give up a rousing version of the doxology.

Joc-You're afraid of butterflies? I need to hear why sometime. It's got to be interesting.

Kate-
I appreciate your envy. I worked hard for this little sucker. I refused to spend money ordering caterpillars online, so I lucked out when I found the caterpillars on my parsley plant out back. I found three, brought them indoors, put them in a mesh hamper, changed the bottom of their cage daily so that their poop wouldn't cause any bacterial infection (I'm not crazy...a website recommended it), and fed them fresh parsley twice a day. With all of that care that I don't even give my dog, 2 of them still died. I was thrilled when one lived.

For the record, I've tried this experiment before and the caterpillars have all died. Either they are surprisingly hard to keep alive or I just have really bad luck with them. :-)

So glad this one lived!!!! I saw it as a caterpillar and now it's a butterfly ;) I am impressed---I have never known someone that actually has done this before. Yippee! I'm proud of you for the follow thru. I know God was the actual one that turned it into a butterfly, but you helped :0 K-K

A few years back we found numerous "worms" on our parsley. The boys and I quickly eradicated them only to find out later what their future could have been. Still makes me kind of sick!

I love the singing!! It could be screaming so be careful what you wish for!!

The butterfly is beautiful. I'm so glad God blessed you with at least one to watch grow into a beautiful butterfly. :-)
